donkey, brett favre, kanye: who’s waffling?

waffles are a delicious, sweet and filling breakfast.  in shrek 4, donkey’s inability to resist waffles leads to shrek and him discovering an underground (literally) communtiy of ogres.

donkey has never waffled on his love of waffles

waffle can also be used as a verb to indicate a lack of confidence in a decision and a shift in opinion.

during the world cup, i explained to students that by changing which team i thought would win the tournament after each round, sometimes from game to game,  i was waffling.

i consider what favre does deliberating, not waffling

critics have frequently used waffling to describe brett favre‘s decision to retire or not over the past few seasons

Favre threw a curveball into his annual ritual of waffling over retirement, saying he could be around a lot longer.  “Hell, you gotta quit sometime,” Favre said. “Then again, maybe I will be doing this when I’m 50 years old, who knows?”

 kanye making friends at twitter

and kanye west this week had a major change of opinion about having a twitter account that could be called waffling.

the expression is maybe most frequently used to criticize politicians for changing their minds on an issue, however new information or experience can offer a different perspective, and while consistency is a characteristic we want leaders to have, it can sometimes be wise to take a new position.  the inablity to do so can be arrogant or even dangerous.
