the how the test was won episode of the simpsons is full of great examples i have been talking about lately in different classes and/or here on richyrocks english.
>>around 13:30 in the vid homer has realized that because he forgot to pay his insurance bill, the family will be without coverage until 3:00 that afternoon. he returns to the house to find marge hosting a book club meeting, and he daydreams that the guests suffer a series of attrocious accidents, which brings marge to exclaim “oh my god! oh my god! we’re totally liable!!” liable means legally responsible.
marge is the bear, homer is the blanket. or vice versa.
>>around (16:15) marge forgives homer for not having mailed the insurance payment, and homer says
baby, i hope you got snuggle insurance cos i’m about to file a claim.
claim is a request from an inusrance policy holder that the insurance company pay damages.
can addidas claim that the jabulani is the most famous football in history?
a related idea that i have talked about in my free classes on edufire is the verb claim, which means to say something with conviction or believe it’s true despite other people’s doubts. at the end of last year we saw a reporter claim that steven seagal claims he is a god, and last month we watched a canadian newscast that reported on the jabulani, the official ball for the south africa 2010 world cup. designers of the ball claim that aerodynamic grooves and a new configuration give it unmatched flight characteristics.
a nitwit is a person with a deficiency of inteligence. ralph is a good example.
finally, at (18:35) principal skinner returns to the school with the students and groundskeeper willie welcomes them, referring to ralph wiggum as the wee nitwit. wee means little and sounds very scottish, which is groundskeeper willie’s nationality.

a wee scottish musical combo
international singing phenomena susan boyle is also scottish. in a free on-line class a couple months ago, we watched boyle being interviewed by lorraine kelly (also scottish) on british television. kelly empathizes that it must be a wee bit scary when masses of people come up to susan at airports, and later tells the audience that susan looks like her wee sister.
Very usefull. This is interesting and fun!!
Richi, I did not get what this phrase means – ‘snuggle insurance’
snuggle means to hug someone for an extended period, not just a moment like a typical hug. it’s romantic but not sexual. the theme of the episode is insurance, and homer uses an insurance metaphor for comedic effect. he is grateful for marge’s forgiveness and snuggling will be her reward.
