glenn beck, casablanca (sigh) dawson’s creek, the 82nd academy awards & richyrocks english

last tuesday i gave a free english class on edufire based on a clip from cnn of glenn beck criticizing the political correctness of a proposition to legally change the name of  immigrants in florida  from illegal aliens to  undocumented citizens.  beck’s conclusion was a  paraphrase of the standard (a song many artists have done their own version of) as time goes by from the movie casablanca:

you have to remember this:  a kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.  and aliens are still illegal.  that fundamental thing applies no matter how much time goes by.

listen to jimmy durante sing the actual lyrics.  durante was the narrator of the american television christmas classic frosty the snowman

in the following class  (last thursday) we saw a short scene from the popular series dawson’s creek that was connected to glenn beck’s rant and casablanca by  actor joshua johnson’s excessive sighing as confused high school kid pacey witter, the role that launched his hollywood career.

pacey witter.  total douchebag.  stop sighing so fucking much.

finally,  the 82nd academy awards was also connected to this mix of english language icons last week. 10 movies were selected this year in the best picture category, doubling the 5 that are typically nominated.  the last time the academy nominated that number of movies for best picture was 1943 when the winner was none other than casablanca, a fact that was referenced several times in the media leading up to last sunday’s awards ceremony, and mentioned during the television broadcast.

as time goes by  as it was used in casablanca
